Costa Concordia Parbuckling Completed

Costa Concordia Salvage

Officials have confirmed that the parbuckling of the Costa Concordia has been completed after a 19 hour operation and the ship is now sitting in its final upright position on underwater platforms.  Oil booms were placed around  vessel to contain any pollution or oil trapped in the ship, but no spill was spotted during the operation. The next step in the Concordia salvage is to stabilising it and preparing for it to be re-floated.  Giant buoyancy tanks will be attached before it is towed away for scrap in the following months.

The 59 meter long, 1150 dwt freighter Pasha capsized and sank in the Marmara Sea near Narlı Köyü, Turkey.  The Pasha was headed to Casablanca from Istanbul with a cargo of plywood and containers when it suffered a heavy list after the cargo shifted in heavy seas.  The crew alerted authorities at the Dardanelles Vessel Traffic Center that the Pasha had a heavy list about 50 degrees to starboard.  Authorities dispatched a lifeboat and tug to the scene and took the nine crew off the Pasha and towed the vessel to a quay off Narlı Köyü.   The Pasha capsized and sank a few hours later with the deck containers sliding off the deck.   Authorities placed oil booms around the Pasha to contain any pollution released.

The 42 foot long tugboat Andrew J. capsized and sank while locking through the west lane of the  Welland Canal.   The Andrew J. along with the tug Kimberly Anne had entered the lock with a barge.   As the locked filled with water, the Andrew J. lost stability, capsized and sank in the lock.  The captain of the tug, the single occupant of the tug, was able to escape.   No reports of injuries.   Some diesel fuel was released into the water.   A large crane was brought in to assist with salvaging the tug.   Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.
