Tanker-Barge Waldhof sinks

The 330 foot tanker (barge) Waldhof capsized and sank on the Rhine river close to the Lorelei Rock between Koblenz and St. Goarshausen, Germany. The barge was carrying 2,400 tons of sulfuric acid from Ludwigshafen, Germany to Antwerp, Belgium. Two of the 4 crewmen onboard were pulled from the river and are in good shape. There is no indication why the vessel capsized. Reports state there was some concern about acid leaking from the tanker, but officals stated the vessel’s double-hull has remained intact and there were no leaks.

The 499 dwt tanker Seiyoh capsized and sank in the Sea of Japan. The tanker left Oita, Japan bound for Niigata with a cargo of vinyl acetate monomer. The vessel developed a list as it was pounded by high winds and 12-16 foot waves. The vessel’s engine room flooded and the crew abandoned ship. Reports state that 4 of the 5 crewmen onboard were rescued, but one perished later from cardiopulmonary arrest. The master of the vessel is reported missing.

Fishing vessel lost after collision

The 50629 dwt boxship Zim Shekoul may have overran a fishing vessel in the Korea Strait near Busan, South Korea. The vessel was approaching Busan at night when it spotted the capsized fishing vessel. The master tried to contact the fishing vessel and turned back to do a search, but found no one in the water. The master did contact authorities that it might have struck another vessel. Report states 9 crewmen were missing and 1 injured from the fishing vessel. The Zim Shekoul had left Qingdao bound for Busan.
