Around noon on February 12, the 340 meter long United States Aircraft Carrier Harry S. Truman collided with the 189 meter long, 53020 dwt bulk carrier Besiktas M (IMO: 9291365) in the Mediterranean Sea near Port Said, Egypt. The aircraft carrier was awaiting to enter the Suez  Canal when it collided with the bulk carrier. Reports state both vessels sustained some damage above the waterline. No reports of injuries, water ingress and no pollution was released.

Both vessels were able proceed under their own power. Reports state the Bestiktas M was on a voyage from Aqaba to Constanta, but has dropped anchor off Port Said after the incident. There was no statement released if the Harry S. Truman will proceed on its voyage to the Red Sea or will return to a port for repairs. The incident is under investigation.

Essence

On the morning of February 6, the 168 meter long, 21298 dwt container ship Essence (IMO: 9491496)  collided with the 142 meter long, 9516 dwt container ship X-Press Mülhacen (IMO: 9365960) on the Kiel Canal next to the Holtenau locks at Kiel, Germany. The Essence, en route to Rotterdam from Kotka, was exiting out of the south lock in thick fog when it scraped against the X-Press Mülhacen as it was attempting to enter the north lock. Both vessels were detained while the water police launched an investigation into the incident. After the questioning and inspections were completed a few hours later, the Essence was allowed to proceed on its voyage. Reports state the X-Press Mülhacen was detained until the evening of February 6 before it could continue on its journey to Gdynia.  There were no reports of injuries or any pollution released.

Nuclear Collision: 50 Let Pobedy

On the night of January 26, the 159 meter long, 3505 dwt nuclear icebreaker 50 Let Pobedy (IMO: 9152959) collided with the 153 meter long, 20,144 dwt cargo vessel Yamal Krechet (IMO: 9202041) in the Kara Sea in the Northern Sea Route off Russia. Reports state the icebreaker was struck by the Yamal Krechet resulting in a large gash on the port bow hull above the waterline. Reports state the 50 Let Pobedy continued to operate and there was no damage to the vessel’s nuclear reactor.

News reports state the icebreaker may have to return to Murmansk for repairs. No reports of injuries on either vessel.
