Floundering: The vessel struggles through heavy seas and 55mph winds in the Drake Passage

The 2420 dwt cruise ship Clelia II suffered damage while crossing the Drake Strait. The vessel was on a return trip to Ushuaia, Argentina after sailing to Antartica. Reports state a wave struck the bridge deck knocking out some electrical and communication equipment. The vessel was reduced to one engine for a period of time. Conditions had wave heights 30 feet with sustained winds at 55 miles per hour. Only 1 crew reported injured of the 88 passengers and 77 crew onboard.

The Carnival cruise ship Splendor after a fire in the engine room disabled all six diesel engines. The fire was extinguished, but it left the vessel with just auxilary power as the ship’s generators were disabled. Multiple tugboats are towing the Splendor back to San Diego, USA. The aircraft carrier USS Ronald Regan also provided aide by delivering food and supplies including Spam, crabmeat and Pop Tarts. No injuries reported of the 4,500 passengers or crew. Reports state an investigation into the cause of the fire will be conducted.
