The 64 meter long, 1050 dwt cargo vessel KM Cargo Asia Raya caught fire off Kupang, Timor, Indonesia. The Asia Raya had departed from Kupang with 634 cattle and 37 crew when a fire broke out just a few miles offshore. Reports state the crew had panic as the vessel suddenly listed over as it was overloaded.  The crew ignited some distress flares, but the flares also ignited the fodder on board. The vessel was quickly engulfed in flames.  All 37 crew on board were rescued and some cattle on board was pushed overboard.

The 148 meter long ro-ro passenger ferry Af Francesca caught fire off the Apulian Coast near Bari, Italy.  The ferry was proceeding from Bari to Durres, Albania with 203 passengers and 53 crew when a fire broke out in the engine room.  The crew was able to put the blaze out a short time later.  No reports of injuries or pollution released. The fire disabled the vessel and tugs were requested.  A tug arrived and towed the Af Francesca to Bari.  All passengers safely departed and were transferred to other vessels.  Authorities launched an investigation into the incident.

On April 21, the 82 foot long fishing vessel Northern Pride caught fire off Kodiak Island, Alaska. The vessel was proceeding to Seward when it caught fire off Marmot Island.  The three crew were unable to contain the fire and abandoned ship. The Northern Pride later capsized and was believed sunk. On May 7, the overturn hull of the Norther Pride washed ashore along the coastline of Katmai National Park in the Shelikof Strait. The Coast Guard spotted the overturn hull and reported an oil sheen around the wreck. A salvage company was hired to recovered and remove the hull.
