The 230 meter long LNG tanker DL Calla suffered an explosion off Kuala Terengganu, Malaysia. The tanker with its 23 crew was en route from South Korea to Thailand when it had a cargo leak resulting in the explosion.  The explosion caused minimal damage to the vessel, but two crewmen were injured and two others perished from severe burns. The remaining crew was able to extinguish the fire by the time Malaysian authorities arrived on scene. Reports state the DL Calla continued its journey to Thailand under its own power.

On December 4, the 90 meter long supply vessel Stril Myster suffered a fire while off Haugesund, Norway. The fire started in the vessel’s engine room releasing dense black smoke and disabling the vessel.  The authorities were alerted with a lifeboat, Sea King helicopter and a tug dispatched to the scene. The local fire brigade from Rogaland were ready to be flown to the Stril Myster, but the crew was able to get the fire under control.  After two hours since the fire ignited, the fire was brought under control.  The crew closed off the engine room and the vessel was taken under tow by the tug Thorax and escorted by the lifeboat.  No reports of injuries to the 14 crew or pollution released.

On November 29, the 139 meter long ro-ro passenger ferry Ierapetra L caught fire off Brindisi, Italy.  The ferry had just departed from Brindisi bound for Bari with 23 crew on board when a fire broke out in the vessel’s engine room.  The crew attempted to douse the blaze, but were unable to control it.  The crew requested assistance with nearby vessels responding.  With assistance, the fire was finally extinguished by the on board fire supression system.  The Ierapetra L turned back to port escorted by three patrol boats. No reports of injuries.  The ferry sustained significant damage to the engine room and had visible signs of heat damage to the hull.
