On the afternoon of October 16, the 28 meter long fishing vessel Noruego (IMO: 8649486) caught fire in the South Atlantic off Angola. The fire started at the stern of the trawler and quickly spread through the superstructure. The four crew were unable to extinguish the blaze as flames reached meters high and smoke could be seen from miles away. Many local vessels came to the aid of the Noruego, but they were unable to extinguish the fire.  Reports state the 4 crew were rescued. One crew member suffered burns and a broken leg during the incident.

Reports state the Noruego burned to the the waters edge. The Noruego was built in 2003 in Norway. The vessel had been recently converted from fishing swordfish to octopus.

On the afternoon of October 13, a fishing vessel (name not disclosed) caught fire in the Taiwan Strait off Jibei Island, Penghu County, Taiwan.  Authorities state the fire broke out on an abandoned fishing vessel along the shore. The local fire department arrived on site and found flames shooting into the air.  After an hour, the fire fighters were able to extinguish the blaze, but the fishing vessel was heavily gutted by the fire.

An investigation into the incident has been launched. Authorities were uncertain as the fishing vessel’s registration was unknown. Investigators have stated the fire may have been started by arson.  There were no one onboard at the time of the incident.

On the early morning of October 12, a 129 ton fishing vessel (name not disclosed) caught fire in the East China Sea some 34 kilometers southeast of Marado Island in Seogwipo, Jeju, South Korea. The fire started in the engine room of the purse seiner and quickly spread through the vessel.  The crew alerted the South Korean Coast Guard who dispatched a helicopter along with 5 patrol boats to assist.  The Coast Guard also asked nearby vessel to aid the fishing vessel. The 27 crew members on board the fishing vessel would be later rescued by a nearby vessel.  Six crew members had sustain injuries including smoke inhalation and burns to the face and arms. They would be later transported to hospital in Jeju City for treatment.

Reports stated the patrol vessels arrived on the scene and used water cannons to extinguish the blaze. The extent of damage caused by the fire was not disclosed. Authorities have launched an investigation. Initial reports state the crew heard a loud bang right before the fire started.
