Black Watch

The 205 meter long, 5656 dwt cruise passenger ship Black Watch caught fire while en route to Funchal, Madeira. The fire started in the vessel’s auxillary engine room and was quickly extinguished by the crew. No reports of injuries to passengers or the crew. The crew were able to restore power after a few hours with two of the four main engines operational. The Black Watch was reported to continue its voyage to Funchal where passengers will disembark and fly home to the United Kingdom.

The 46 meter long, 556 dwt towboat Ursa Major caught fire off Gioia Tauro, Italy. The Ursa Major was pushing a barge loaded with miscellaneous cargo from Taranto to Genoa when the fire broke out in the towboat. The crew requested assistance as the Ursa Major had been disabled by the fire and went adrift.  Authorities received the distress call and dispatched an Italian coast guard patrol boat to the scene. The patrol boat arrived with firefighters who were able to extinguish the blaze a short time later. No reports of injuries to the 13 crew on board.  No reports of pollution released.

The 67 meter long, 1740 dwt cargo vessel Sukran Camuz caught fire while anchored in Mersin, Turkey. The fire spread through the superstructure.  Local tugs and fire brigades were called to the scene and were able to extinguish the blaze a few hours later. The superstructure sustained severe damage. Reports state the vessel had been at anchor in the area since 2008 and no crew was reported to be on board at the time.
