The 185 meter long, 21000 dwt container ship Kea Trader ran aground on a reef near the island of Maré in the Loyalty Islands, New Caledonia. The Kea Trader was headed to Noumea from Papeete when it struck the Durand reefs some 50 miles southeast of Maré. The boxship was firmly on the reef and the situation was reported as stable. No reports of injuries or pollution released. The crew remain on board the Kea Trader while the shipowner makes arrangements for mitigating pollution and possible salvage. Authorities have dispatched an intervention team to assess the situation.

On July 2, the fishing vessel Deceptive C ran aground in the Stikine Strait near Wrangell, Alaska. The vessel had run hard aground and released some pollution. The Coast Guard diverted the Cutter Bailey Barco to the scene to monitor the situation. Authorities stated that pollution was minimal with only three gallons of oily bilge water had been released. No reports of injuries.

After a few days, authorities reported they were able to mitigate any further pollution. Using the Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund, a firm was contracted to remove all the diesel fuel on board along with any hazardous materials. Reports state over 3,000 pounds of oil waste and debris was removed from the Deceptive C.

No reports if the fishing vessel will be salvaged.

 

 

Argent Cosmos

The 170 meter long, 33609 dwt tanker Argent Cosmos ran aground on the Columbia River near Skamokawa, Washington. The Argent Cosmos was headed to China from Clatskanie, Oregon with a cargo of 1.6 million gallons of ethanol and 6.6 million gallons of monoethylene glycol when it suffered a mechanical malfunction.

Two tugs were dispatched to assist refloating the tanker on the rising tide. The Coast Guard dispatched a helicopter to conduct an over flight. No reports of injuries, damage or pollution released. Reports state the Argent Cosmos was refloated and proceeded to Longview for inspection.
