The 30 meter long catamaranferryProvincetown III went aground in Boston Harbour near Long Island. The vessel struck bottom after a navigational error. The 149 passengers on board were transferred to other vessels including the Quincy police boat and the ferry Provincetown II. No reports of injuries.
The 24 meter long fishing vessel Torea went aground in Foveaux Strait near Ruapuke Island, New Zealand. The fishing vessel was carrying 23 passengers when it struck a rock off Green Island holing the hull and allowing water ingress. The master of the vessel steered the Torea into the shallows at Ruapuke Island. The vessel contacted the Coast Guard requesting assistance. Two Coast Guard vessels, three helicopters and five fishing vessels responded to the call. The passengers were transferred to the Coast Guard vessel along with a local pilot boat and taken back to Bluff, New Zealand. No reports of injuries. Maritime New Zealand has launched an investigation into the incident.
The 262 dwt ro-ropassenger ferry Super Shuttle Ferry 15 went aground near Merida, Leyte, Philippines. The ferry had left port at Ormoc City with 191 passengers headed for Cebu City when it lost power after suffering engine failure. The vessel drifted until it ran aground onto shallow waters. The vessel contacted the Philippine Coast Guard stating the vessel had gone aground and it’s sister ship, the Super Shuttle Ferry 23, was being sent to the scene. A few hours later the Super Shuttle Ferry 23 arrived and safely transferred 185 passengers and proceeded back to Ormoc City. No reports of injuries. The Super Shuttle Ferry 15 will be refloated by the assistance of the Super Shuttle 23 on the following day. Authorities dispatched inspectors and personnel to help assess the situation.
