The 23 meter long fishing vessel L’Ar Voaleden struck bottom at Basse-Vieille near Cape Chèvre, France. The trawler had run onto the rocks resulting in significant hull damage including its fuel tank holed. Reports state some diesel fuel was released into the sea, but fortunately the tank was nearly empty at the time of the grounding. The L’Ar Voaleden was able to proceed to the nearby port of Rosmeur where it unloaded its catch before it was pulled out of the water for repairs. No reports of injuries, but a small amount pollution had been released. Reports state the oil was contained using absorbent pads.

TS Taipei

The 168 meter long, 20615 dwt container ship TS Taipei broke up just offshore off Taiwan. The TS Taipei had gone ashore on March 10 after suffering engine failure.  The vessel remained hard aground while salvage operations attempted to remove fuel off the vessel. However, salvage was suspended due to a severe storm which also caused the vessel finally broke-in-two. The hull cracked amidships and fuel oil was released from ruptured bunker tanks. Authorities dispatched a pollution response team to the scene along with multiple boats. Booms were placed around the pollution to contain any further oil released. Reports also state that several containers have fallen overboard which may contain hazardous chemicals.

On March 10, the 57 foot long fishing vessel Bergen was wrecked along the shore in Squalicum Harbor, Washington.  The Bergen was berthed in Bellingham Bay when 70 mph winds caused the mooring lines to snap.  The wind blew the fishing vessel away from the dock and onto the seawall.  The three crew on board awoke to find the vessel going to pieces. Two were able to don their survival suits before jumping into the sea.  The third had to dive into the water before he could put his suit on.  All three were later rescued by the Coast Guard.  No reports of injuries.  Authorities placed a boom around the sunken Bergen to contain any pollution released.
