Sand Barge sunk Noorderlicht Rhine

The 70 meter long self-propelled barge Noorderlicht sank on the Rhine River near a lock between Amerongen and Laurik, Netherlands. An exhaust pipe had broken in the engine room allowing water to flood into the vessel.  The stern of the Noorderlicht partially sank while the bow remained above water.  A patch was placed over the leak and the pumps were to dewater the vessel before it can be towed to a nearby shipyard. No reports of injuries.

On August 8, 2014, the m/v Andeswara sank off South Sumatra, Indonesia.  The vessel was last reported  at 03 13 S, 106 13E with 37 people on board.  The vessel was en route to Bangka Toboali from Mud River when it encountered heavy seas with waves reaching 3 meters in height.  The Andeswara quickly flooded and sank.  Authorities and local fishermen rushed to the scene and found some  15 survivors.   The search continued with an additional 9 bodies were recovered.

Cornelia Marie rescues capsized f/v Auriga

The 40 foot long fishing vessel Auriga capsized at the entrance to the Unakwik Inlet near Valdez, Alaska.  The Auriga had been fishing near Eaglek Bay when a storm approached.  The crew had ceased fishing operations and prepared for the storm when the vessel was struck by a large rogue wave.  The Auriga capsized and partially sank.  The four crewmen on the Auriga were rescued by the nearby fishing vessel Cornelia Marie who transported the men to Valdez.  No reports of injuries.  The owners of the Auriga have contracted salvage team to remove the fuel and salvage the vessel.  The Auriga was reported to have 200 gallons of fuel and 18,000 pounds of fish on board at the time.  The cause of the incident is under investigation.
