The 238 ton, cargo vessel Lurongyu 859 sank off the Oki Islands, Japan. Authorities in Japan were notified by Chinese search and rescue that the Lurongyu 859 had sunk with 14 crew on board. Five crew had been rescued, but nine were still reported as missing. Patrol and rescue boats have continued search efforts for the missing men.

On September 19, the 11 meter long, 25 gt tugboat SPS Virginia mysteriously sank on the Merrimack River off Deer Island near Amesbury, Massachusetts. The SPS Virginia had been moored unmanned off Deer Island when it was reported missing the following day. A search for the tug found it resting on its side in 20 to 30 feet of water. Salvagers were called in and were able to refloat the SPS Virginia a few days later. The SPS Virginia was brought to the surface, pumped out and towed to a basin.  Reports state there was no visible damage to the vessel and all hatches were still secured. The Coast Guard has launched an investigation into the incident.

The 42 foot long fishing vessel Sea Shepherd collided with the Coast Guard Cutter Key Largo off Vieques, Puerto Rico. The Key Largo struck the fishing vessel during the early morning hours. The Sea Shepherd sank after the collision in 100 feet of water. The two crew on the Sea Shepherd were safely rescued.  No reports of injuries or pollution released.
