On June 8, the 260 foot long barge Nash was under tow by the tug Calvin off Santa Barbara, California.  The Nash was loaded with 3,900 tons of magnesium chloride when it suffered a leak off Point Conception and began to sink.  The crew of the Calvin alerted the Coast Guard , but the barge quickly flooded and sank stern first.   The barge’s bow remain above water, but the stern tanks were crushed and the hull was severely damaged preventing any salvage.  Salvors were requested to requested and patched the hull just sufficient enough so the Nash could be towed to deeper water.  On June 17, the barge was towed out and scuttled offshore.  No reports of injuries.  The cargo of magnesium chloride was reported to be non-hazardous with no projected impact to the environment.

The 2242 dwt chemical tanker Shoko Maru exploded while in the Japan Sea off Kobe, Japan.  The tanker was anchored with only ballast after off loading heavy oil at a nearby port when fumes from the cargo tanks exploded.  Seven crew were rescued, but many suffered burns and were hospitalized.  The master of the vessel was reported missing and presumed lost.

The Shoko Maru suffered extensive damage from the explosion and resulting fire.  Coast Guard and fire fighting vessels were able to extinguish the blaze, but the tanker sustained too much damage and sank bow a short time later.  Reports state the explosion was started by a spark while a crewman using a grinder to remove paint off the cargo deck.

Confid Breaks Up

The 85 meter long  self-propelled barge Confid broke-in-two on the Maas River near Lomm, Netherlands.  The Confid was loading 1400 tons of gravel when the vessel’s hull failed and broke-in-tow.  The bow section remained above water while the stern sank.  The four crewmen on board were able to escape by jumping into the water before the stern sank.  Oil was spotted and authorities requested an anti-pollution vessel while booms were placed around the vessel.  Reports states that some 7 tons of diesel fuel was on the Confid.  A vehicle on board the Confid at the time of the sinking was later recovered.  Divers surveyed the wreck, but no details reported to why the hull failed.  Salvage of the Confid is expected to take a week as the gravel must be removed first.
