Collision off Vigo Spain

The 185 gt fishing vessel Mar de Marin collided with the 164 meter long, 12466 dwt car carrier Baltic Breeze in the Vigo river off Vigo, Spain.  The trawler had turned into the path of the Baltic Breeze causing the collision.  The Mar de Marin sank three minutes later.  Five crew were able to make it to a life raft and were rescued.  The other 5 men on board perished.  The fishing vessel rests in 52 meters of water.  Reports state the Baltic Breeze was allowed to proceed on to Algeria.  Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.

The 75 meter long,1884 gt fishing vessel Tiantai was reported lost in the southern Indian Ocean near the location 60 00.96S 102 18.12E.  The vessel was most likely fishing for the Patagonian toothfish off Antarctica when it encountered severe weather with seven meter waves and 70 kph winds.   The vessel’s emergency beacon alerted authorities who dispatched aircraft to find the fishing vessel.   However the search was called off after spotting only debris in the area.  Any crew who made it to a life raft could not survive in the freezing conditions.  Reports state the official registration for the Tiantai was in doubt and the vessel may have been involved in illegal fishing.

The 70 meter long, 1730 dwt cement carrier Sumise Maru No. 38 collided with the 52 meter long, 696 dwt chemical tanker Kaisei Maru in the Japan Sea off Hyogo, Japan.   The Sumise Maru was proceeding in ballast from Osaka to Ako when it was struck by the Kaisei Maru.  The Sumise Maru filled with with water and  sank 3 hours later.  One crewman on each vessel was injured in the collision.  The Kaisei Maru was able to proceed under its own power to Himeji.  The tanker was carrying 1000 tons of methanol from Osaki-Kamijima to Himeji.
