On December 8, the 66 foot long towboat Ricky Robinson sank on the Mississippi River off Mud Island near Memphis, Tennessee. It is unclear what caused the towboat to sink. The Coast Guard was notified and begun a search and rescue operation for the two people on board.  A search by local authorities and the Coast Guard were unable to locate the two crew.

However, authorities were able to find the Ricky Robinson which now rests on the bottom in 65 feet of water. The owners of the vessel state they will salvage the towboat. The Coast Guard has launched an investigation into the incident.

On December 4, the 54 meter long coastal tanker Qi Cheng Xian Feng ran aground and sank near the north dyke of the Yangtze River Estuary. The tanker had run aground at low tide and sustained multiple hull breaches. With the rising tide, the Qi Cheng Xian Feng later sank by the stern.  All 9 crew on board were able to abandon ship and rescued by authorities. No reports of injuries. No reports if the Qi Cheng Xian Feng has released any pollution.

The 97 meter long cargo vessel Yu Tong 1 sank near Huilai, Guangdong, China. The Yu Tong 1 was headed to Jieyang from Maoming with 5000 tons of iron ore when it was hit by stormy weather. The Yu Tong 1 began to take on water by the heavy seas.  The vessel’s pumps were unable to control the flooding and the Yu Tong 1 developed a list.  Fearing the cargo vessel would capsize, the 14 crew alerted authorities and abandoned ship.

Two tugs along with 5 other vessels assisted in a search and rescue operation. Reports state all 14 crew were later rescued.
