The wooden fishing vessel Atlantic Osprey ran aground and sank off Balbriggan near Dublin, Ireland. The Atlantic Osprey was fishing razor clams when it suffered a power blackout after the main engine failed. The crew attempted to restart the engine, but could not restore power before the vessel was blown onto an offshore sandbank near the Balbriggan harbour. Waves pounded the wooden hull causing the seams to open up allowing water ingress.

The crew alerted local authorities the Atlantic Osprey was in danger and needed assistance. The Coast Guard dispatched a helicopter to the scene while the RNLI launched lifeboats from Howth Skerries and Clogherhead as part of the rescue effort. The Howth Skerries lifeboat was able to pull alongside the Atlantic Osprey and safely transfer all 5 crew. No reports of injuries.

After the crew were rescued, authorities attempted to keep the Atlantic Osprey afloat. Three pumps were placed on the trawler, but the flooding could not be brought under control. The vessel later partially sank a few hours later.

Reports state there are efforts to salvage the fishing vessel. No signs of pollution were reported, but the vessel contained 400 litres of diesel fuel at the time of the incident.

Bereket

The 115 meter long, 3159 dwt cargo vessel Bereket sank in the Marmara Sea near Istanbul, Turkey. The Bereket was laid up for winter at the Ahirkapi Anchorage when it sustained a leak near the engine room and water ingress. With no one on board at the time, the flooding continued until the vessel sank by the stern.

Local authorities were alerted and dispatched a team to monitor the situation. An oil sheen was spotted around the hull and pollution control efforts were started. An investigation has been started into the incident. Reports state the vessel had been unmanned and received no maintenance for several months.

Fisktrans

On January 25, the 57 meter long fish carrier Fisktrans ran aground and sank near Bodo, Norway. In stormy seas the Fisktrans had become disabled and went adrift. The fish carrier had its steering system fail and the crew tried in vain make repairs. Authorities were alerted dispatching a rescue boat and helicopter to the scene.

With strong winds pushing the vessel quickly towards nearby shallow water, the crew dropped the anchor hoping to keep the Fisktrans off the rocks. The crew hoped the anchor would hold and the vessel would ride out the storm, but the fish carrier had struck bottom. The stern of the Fisktrans had been damaged allowing water ingress.

A Sea King helicopter arrived on scene along with the fishing vessel Gularøy. The helicopter was unable to hoist the crew off the aft deck of Fisktrans as conditions were too rough. Instead, the crew of six had to jump into the sea one by one and then lifted to safety. No reports of injuries.
