On December 15, the 114 meter long, 3134 dwt freighter Sandra II was damaged by ice while attempting to enter the Azov Sea. The Sandra II was following an icebreaker from Azov when the vessel’s hull was cut by ice breaching the ballast tank in the foreship. No reports of injuries. The Sandra II diverted to Eysk for repairs. The Sandra II was en route to Turkey with 3000 tons of wheat.
The 73 foot long fishing vessel Carolina Girl 3 went aground near the entrance to the St. Johns River at Jacksonville, Florida. The fishing vessel had suffered water ingress and was risk of sinking when the crew intentionally ran the vessel ashore. The Coast Guard was contacted and dispatched a 45-foot motor lifeboat to the scene. The lifeboat crew provided pumps which were able to de-water the vessel. No reports of injuries.
The 85 meter long self-propelled barge Nautic 1 broke-in-two while on the Rhine-Herne Canal at Gelsenkirchen, Germany. The Nautic 1 was being loaded with a cargo of scrap metal when the vessel suffered hull failure amidships. The vessel’s stern sank while the bow was thrust out of the water into air. No reports of injuries of the three crew on board. The local fire brigade responded to the scene and placed oil boom around the vessel as some oil pollution was released from the submerged engine room. A crane was requested to help raise the Nautic 1 in the following week. Reports state the cause of the incident was due to failure to distribute the cargo while loading along with the age of the hull. The Nautic 1 was built in 1957.
