The freighter suffered no damage or injuries, but the small boat was taken out of the water to be inspected. The John D. Leitch remained at Lorain while the Coast Guard conducted an investigation. Reports state the crew were tested for alcohol, bur the results were negative. The freighter was allowed to leave port later the same day.
