The 58 foot fishing vessel Kimberly went aground in Jute bay, Shelikof Strait, Alaska.  The vessel relayed its situation to family who contacted the Coast Guard.   The fishing vessel was hard aground and the crew remained on board overnight due the winds reaching 100 mph and 16 foot waves.   The Coast Guard dispatched an airplane and helicopter to the scene who were nearby waiting until daylight to attempt a rescue.   Just as dawn approached, a second helicopter was dispatched to allow the first to return for refueling.   As the second helicopter approached, another call was received that another vessel was sinking off Kodiak Island.  While the helicopter was away, the four crew of the Kimberly walked to shore during low tide.   A third helicopter arrived and hoisted the four crew safely on board.    No reports of injuries.   The Coast Guard is conducting an investigation into the incident.

The 29 meter long tug Nathan E. Stewart along with its 287 foot tanker-barge became disabled after the starboard engine failed while off Cape Fairweather, Alaska.   The tug has able to maintain power but not enough to keep the vessel from drifting.   The barge is loaded with 2,500,000 gallons of diesel fuel.  The Coast Guard has dispatched cutters to the scene.   A commercial tug from Hawk Inlet has also been dispatched to the scene.  No reports of injuries, damage or pollution being released.   Reports state the tug and barge are off shore and there are no concerns the vessel may run aground.

Morning Cedar Adrift

The 200 meter long, 28100 dwt freighter Morning Cedar loaded with packaged timber became disabled off Tanaga Island, Alaska.  The freighter’s rudder became stuck hard to starboard due to a hydraulic leak.  The crew was unable to make repairs, but the vessel was able to maneuver away from the island by the combination of main propulsion and bow thrusters.   Conditions are poor with winds up to 45 mph and waves up to 15 feet.   The freighter contacted the Coast Guard who dispatched aircraft to the scene.  The cutter Sherman was diverted to the scene as a precaution.   The owner of the vessel is arranging to have a commerical tug to take the Morning Cedar under tow.  No reports of injuries to any of the 23 crew on board.
