On February 16, the 156 meter long, 21243 dwt heavy lift vessel Wish Way allided with the Queen Juliana Bridge l at Willemstad, Curaçao. The Wish Way was proceeding under the bridge with a cargo of two container cranes when the cranes struck the underside of the bridge. Both cranes sustained damage and some damage was reported on the bridge.  Traffic on the 56 meter high bridge was suspended until it could be inspected for damage. No reports of injuries.

Both cranes were from China and were only partially built. The cranes were only 2/3 of their projected height so that they could safely pass under the bridge.  Unfortunately, there was some wind while the Wish Way was passing under the bridge causing the incident.  Reports state the repairs of the cranes will delay their use by several months.

 

Washington

On January 28, the 170 foot long, 746 gt towboat Washington with 15 barges allided with the Interstate I-275 Carrol Lee Cropper Road Bridge on the Ohio River near Lawrenceburg, Indiana. Around 4 a.m. the Washington was proceeding slowly upriver with 15 barges loaded with coal when it struck the bridge.  Some of the barges broke free and drifted back downstream.  Nearby towboats came to the assistance and were able to retrieve all the barges. Reports state some of the barges sustained water ingress and required pumps to dewater.

Traffic remained open on the bridge. A later inspection by Kentucky authorities found no damage.  No reports of injuries or pollution released. The Coast Guard has launched an investigation into the incident.

Zaanborg

On January 15, the 118 meter long, 7200 dwt cargo vessel Zaanborg allided with the ENI gas platform AGIP 1 off Ravenna, Italy. The Zaanborg had departed from Ravenna bound for Piraeus when it struck the platform. The Zaanborg returned to Ravenna where it was detained.  The cargo vessel had sustained a large gash in the forepeak above the waterline. No details reported on the AGIP 1 as it was not in operation. No reports of injuries or pollution released.

Reports state there was fog in the area at the time of the incident.  Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.
