Quick action saved the 5485 dwt freighter Rusich 1 off the shores of Lisbon, Portugal. The Rusich 1 had been at anchor when heavy seas from the North Atlantic storm Hercules caused the anchor to drag. The crew were able to start the engines just before the vessel was blown ashore. The Rusich 1 proceeded further out to sea. No reports of injuries, damage or pollution release.
The 22 meter long fishing vessel Dadimar Dos caught fire and sank in the Atlantic Ocean near Capo Verde. The crew requested assistance to MRCC Madrid which dispatched aircraft to the scene. Two nearby fishing vessels also responded. The 10 crew on board the Dadimar Dos abandoned ship and went into the vessel’s life rafts. The fishing vessel Tania Maria arrived on scene and rescued all the crew. No reports of injuries.
The 192 meter long, 35458 dwt bulk freighter Archilleas suffered an explosion and fire in the Atlantic Ocean while off the coast of Western Sahara. The explosion caused some damaged and disabled the bulk carrier. Another vesssel was on the scene monitoring the situation. Reports state a salvage tug was dispatched to take the Achilleas under tow. No further details reported.
