The 140 meter long tanker Balt Flot 3 collided with a barge on the Volga-Baltic Sea Canal near Kurdyug, Russia. The Balt Flot 3 was proceeding with 5193 tons of fuel oil when it changed course to allow a cargo vessel to pass. Unfortunately, the tug BT-Petrokrepost and barge #3428 was in the direct path of the tanker. The barge struck head-on with the Balt Flot 3 causing damage to the tanker below the waterline. The Balt Flot 3 suffered hull breach and water ingress in the bow thruster compartment. No reports of injuries or pollution released. Details and status of the barge and tug were not reported.
On September 15, a barge on Lake Michigan exploded off Michigan City, Indiana. The barge was being used to pull in buoys when there was a fuel leak on board. The crew turned the engine off just before an electrical spark caused an explosion. Three crew sustained injuries and were taken to hospital. Authorities placed a boom around the hull as fuel was released in to the lake. The Coast Guard has launched an investigation into the incident.
Additional information about the vessels sunk by Hurricane Harvey. The Coast Guard has released photos of the towboats Sabine Pass, Sandy Point and Belle Chasse which were in Lydia Ann Channel near Port Aransas, Texas when the hurricane struck. Two vessels, Sabine Pass and Sandy Point, were washed ashore while the Belle Chasse sunk in the Lydia Ann Channel. Each towboat had 2 empty barges which broke free during the hurricane. The barges now rest high and dry on the bank near the channel. No reports of injuries as all 11 crew had been safely evacuated.
Salvage efforts have been started including refloating the of the drillship Paragon DPDS 1 and other vessels sunk or aground near Port Aransas or Corpus Christi, Texas.
