The 585 foot long, 43176 dwt bulk carrier Summer Wind collided with a tanker barge being towed by the 20 meter long  tugboat Miss Susan in the Houston Ship Channel near the end of the Texas City Dike.  The tanker barge, loaded with 924,000 gallons of fuel oil, suffered water ingress and sank  at the end of the dike.   Reports state an unknown amount of fuel oil was released.   A sheen of oil was spotted in the water around the barge.   Authorities closed traffic on the channel between the Intracoastal Waterway to lighter buoy 32.    Two crewmen on the barge were treated for exposure of hydrogen sulfide.  No reports of injuries on the Miss Susan or the Summer Wind.  Texas authorities and Coast Guard have deployed response teams to contain and clean-up the pollution.

The 119 meter long, 12005 dwt cargo vesesl Genius Star VII collided with an oil barge in the Houston Channel.  The oil barge, loaded with 38100 tons of fuel oil, slammed into the port side of the Genius Star VII.  The  Genius Star VII suffered a gash above the waterline on the portside hull.  No reports of injuries or pollution released.  The Genius Star VII was leaving Houston with a cargo of grain before the collision.  The cause of the incident is under investigation.

The 52 meter long towboat collided with the  tanker barge E2MS303 on the Mississippi River near Vacherie,  Louisiana.  The Lindsay Ann Erickson was pushing grain barges and was moving out of the navigation lanes when it struck one of two barges being pushed by the 27 meter long towboat Hannah C. Settoon.  The tanker barge ruptured spilling light crude into the river.

A light sheen of oil was reported, but the amount released was not yet known.   The Coast Guard stopped traffic on a 65 mile stretch of the river until the pollution could be cleaned up.  The cause of the collision is under investigation.  No reports of injuries.
