On January 23, the 105 meter long self-propelled barge Bavaria 52 allided with the lock gate on the Main-Donau Canal at Erlangen, Germany. The Bavaria 52 was en route to Bamberg with 1500 tons of rape seed when it struck the lock gate.  No reports of damage to the barge, injuries or pollution released. The lock gate was severely damaged and was no long operable. Traffic has been halted at Erlangen until the gate can be removed and replaced. Reports state the vessel’s master had ignored traffic signal that the lock gate was closed. Estimated damage is estimated to be over 100,000 Euros.

The 127 meter long passenger vessel Viktoria collided with the 100 meter long self-propelled barge Bavaria 52 on the Danube River near Bratislava, Slovakia.  The Viktoria with 160 passengers on board struck the Bavaria 52 amidship.   The Bavaria 52 suffered significant damage but not enough to have the Bavaria 52 to break-in-two  The Bavaria 52 was lightered 1.5 tons of fuel and was stabilized.   The Viktoria suffered significant damage to it’s bow which prevented the Viktoria to continue on.   The passengers were safely evacuated and will continue the cruise on another vessel.  None of the 5 crew of the Bavaria 52 were injured.
