On the morning of December 13, the water taxi Knot Slow (BZ0168) ran aground in the Caribbean Sea in an area known as the “Short Cut” near Belize City, Belize. The Knot Slow had departed from Belize City on its regular route with stops at Caye Chapel, Caye Caulker and San Pedro. Twenty minutes in the voyage the water taxi was passing through an area called the “Short Cut” when it ran ashore on a mangrove island.

The vessel alerted Belize Port Authority who deployed a response team to the scene of the incident.  Rescuers found the captain and 3 passengers had suffered minor injuries and were taken to Belize City for medical treatment. The remaining passengers on the Knot Slow were later safely transferred to another vessel and continued onto their destination.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.

On June 11, a 65 foot long Guatemalan naval gunboat ran aground on Glovers Reef, Belize. The boat was en route to Mexico when it “lost its bearings” and ventured into Belize’s waters before striking the reef. The Belize coast guard was notified and sent out patrol vessels to the scene.

When the officers of the Guatemalan vessel were interviewed, they stated the vessel had lost steering and gone adrift before it struck the reef.  No reports of injuries.

Paranga

Paranga

The 100 meter long, 4766 dwt container ship Paranga ran aground near English Caye Channel, Belize.  The Paranga was en route to Kingston, Jaimaica from Belize when the crew made a navigational error and struck a reef.   The container ship suffered minimal damage.   No reports of injuries to the 13 crew on board and no pollution was spotted.  The crew contacted the Coast Guard who dispatched a response team to the scene.
