Collision off Constanta

On November 1, the 129 meter long, 11215 dwt tanker Akdeniz collided with the 155 meter long, 17145 dwt container ship Matilde A in the Black Sea off Constanta, Romania. Both vessels had pilots on board proceeding in bad weather when the Akdeniz struck the Matilde A.  The Matilde A sustained damage with a two meter gash and a small hole below the waterline in a starboard ballast tank.  No reports of injuries or pollution released. Both vessels proceeded to Constanta under their own power.   The Matilde A was reported to proceed to a shipyard for my repairs.  Constanta authorities has launched an investigation into the incident.

The 173 meter long, 26,052 dwt general cargo vessel Zealand Amalia became disabled in the Black Sea near the approach to the mouth of the Bosporus. The vessel had suffered engine failure and had dropped anchor a few miles off the Turkish coast.  No reports of injuries, damage or pollution released. The Zealand Amalia was en route to Venice from Mariupol.

On February 18, the 114 meter long, 3261 dwt general cargo vessel Fort Azov sank in the Black Sea near Ayancik, Sinop, Turkey. The Fort Azov was en route from Varna with 3,000 tons of wood when it suffered a cargo shift in bad weather. Reports state the bad weather had caused some deck cargo to wash over board causing the vessel to develop a heavy list to port. The vessel requested assistance before abandoning ship into the vessel’s life rafts. The Turkish Coastguard arrived on scene and safely rescued the 12 crew. The following night the Fort Azov sank. Reports state vessel had frequented to Kerch in the Crimean.
