Collision off Sarangani Bay

The 48 meter long freighter Bulk Carrier I collided with the 161 meter long, 16,162 gt boxship HS Puccini off Tampuan Point near the entry to Sarangani Bay, Philippines.   The Bulk Carrier I had left the wharf at General Santos City into the bay.  The freighter was heading for Dumaguete City with a cargo of 246 tons of corn.   The HS Puccini was sailing from Davao City headed for General Santos City with 16,162 metric tons of cargo.   In the driving rain, the HS Puccini sliced into the starboard side of the Bulk Carrier I.  The freighter nearly rolled over as hull was breached near the engine room.  The Bulk Carrier I soon filled with water and sank.   After the collision, the master of the HS Puccini contacted the Philippines Coast Guard which dispatched rescue craft to the scene.   Other vessels including the passenger ship Superferry helped in the rescue operation.   Reports state 21 men were rescued while two perished from the HS Puccini.  Five of the crewmen rescued were found near the town of Maasim as they attempted to swim for shore.    Six men were reported injured.

An oil slick  has been reported where the Bulk Carrier I sank.   Officals stated that six tons of fuel was released.   The Coast Guard has released dispersants to break up the oil slick and environmental personnel are on scene to assist in the cleanup effort.

Karin Schepers Aground

The 141 meter long,  9000 ton boxship Karin Schepers went aground on Cape Cornwall, United Kingdom.   The boxship was bound for Rotterdam from Cork, Ireland went it struck the sandbank.   Reports state the vessel received assistance from the RNLI, local police and the Coast Guard, but no distress signal was sent out.   A helicopter lowered a man to the vessel to determine the condition of the vessel and crew.   All 13 men on board were uninjured and the vessel was seaworthy.   The Karin Schepers was able to release itself by shifting ballast and using the rising tide.   Surveyors were dispatched to meet with the vessel as it continued on to Rotterdam.   No reports of pollution being released.

An initial investigation has stated the Coast Guard had attempted to contact the Karin Schepers before the grounding.   The boxship had been spotted not using the correct traffic lane.  Reports state the Coast Guard was unable to establish communication with the boxship before it went aground.

Collision in South China Sea

Reports state that a boxship collided with a freighter off the coast of Lianyungang, China.   The boxship heading to Qingdao from Singapore struck the 97 meter long freighter which was heading to Tiajin from Fuzhou.  After the collision, the freighter sank.  Reports state there were 11 crew on the freighter with three being rescued by the boxship.  The remaining eight crew are still listed as missing.

The name of the vessels have not been reported.
