Collision on the Weser

Collision on the Weser

The 294 meter long, 63160 dwt boxship MOL Efficiency was struck by the 166 meter long,  16073 dwt freighter Splittnes in the fog on the Weser River near Bremerhaven, Germany.  The Splittnes had significant damage with the forepeak suffering a hole some 10 to 15 meters long.  The breach allowed a large amount of water to ingress resulting in a 20 degree starboard list.   The MOL Efficiency suffered a large hole in the stern section of the hull just above the waterline.   There were no injuries on either vessel.  Both vessels were towed to a quay where fire rescue were assisting in dewatering the Splittnes.   Reports state that visibility was limited to just 180 meters at the time of the collision.   The water police is conducting an investigation into the incident.

Hoegh Seoul aground

Hoegh Seoul aground

The 16,006 dwt car carrier vesel Hoegh Seoul went aground in the outer Weser River nearBremerhaven, Germany. The Hoegh Seoul was leaving Bremerhaven bound for Antwerp when its steering gear failed sending the vessel out of the busy shipping channel into the shallows. While there was thick fog and poor visibility, it did not play a factor for the vessel?s grounding. Initial inspections show the rudder was damaged which could have led to the steering failure. The Hoegh Seoul was later refloated by four tugs and was taken back to Bremerhaven for further investigation.
