Jui Hsing Aground

The 155 meter long, 18955 dwt freighter Jui Hsing went aground off Keelung, Taiwan while sailing through Typhoon Nalgae.   The Jui Hsing had left Keelung bound for China when it went it went aground on the rocks.   The storm pounded the vessel and the freighter broke-in-two sending the 21 crew into the water.   The authorities dispatched vessels and a helicopter to the scene.  Rescuers were able to save 11 men.   Reports state four men perished while another six were still listed as missing.   Authorities are also attempting to contain the 1 kilometer long oil slick resulting from the  200 tons of diesel and 80 tons of heavy fuel on board the freighter.

Jonas Sinks

The 86 meter long self-propelled barge Jonas broke-in-two and sank at Amsterdam, Netherlands.   The Jonas was at the OBA Bulk-Terminal at Westerhaven Way loading coal when the vessel’s back broke and the vessel sank.  The deckhand was rescued, but the master of the Jonas perished.   Rescuers have sent divers to look for the captain who was found trapped in the wheelhouse.  The Jonas now rests in 14 meters of water.

Janine Broken

Janine Broken

The 85 meter long self-propelled barge Janine broke-in-two after the vessel became stuck on the Hunte near Neuenhuntorf, Germany.   The Janine loaded with 1,000 tons of ore suffered rudder failure and drifted until went aground with the bow on one shoreline and the stern on the other.   As the tide lowered, the vessel’s midsection hung unsupported in the air until it broke-in-two.   No one was hurt in the incident.  Authorities have placed booms around the Janine to help contain any leaking fuel.
