The 119 meter long, 3373 dwt bulk carrier Viscount ran aground on the Volga River near Astrakhan, Russia. The Viscount loaded with metal had veered into the shallows and ran upon a mud bank.  The cargo vessel failed to refloat itself and requested assistance.  No reports of injuries to the 10 crew, damage or pollution released.  The owners has arrange to have a salvage company to refloat the vessel. Reports state that authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.

The 289 meter long, 170,082 dwt bulk carrier New Katerina ran aground in the Suez Canal, Egypt. The New Katerina was proceeding to Qingdao, China from Ukraine with a cargo of iron ore when it struck a canal embankment.  The bulk carrier suffered hull damage with a 12 meter long breach in the bow.  The vessel suffered uncontrolled water ingress in the fore compartments causing the vessel to settle by the bow. No reports of injuries, but some oil pollution was released.  Authorities placed a boom around the New Katerina to contain any further pollution released. Reports state the repairs were underway and some lightering may be required before the New Katerina can be refloated.

On Febuary 9, the 181 meter long, 33,800 dwt bulk carrier Floriana ran aground on the Mississippi River near Pilottown, Louisiana. The Floriana was heading towards New Orleans from Veracruz when it veered out of the shipping channel and run aground on a mud bank.  The bulk carrier was unable to free itself and authorities dispatched a tug to assist in refloating efforts. The Floriana proceeded to anchorage off Pilottown where it was inspected for damage. No reports of injuries, damage or pollution released. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.
