The 190 meter long, 55,652 dwt bulk carrier Alam Manis ran aground off Santa Lucia near Candon City, Luzon, Philippines.  The Alam Manis was en route with 53,795 tonnes of nickel ore to Surigao when it was struck by several large waves and suffered a cargo shift in its cargo holds No. 1 and 2.   Suffering a 14 degree list to starboard, the Alam Manis headed to the nearest port of refuge. A tugboat was requested and arrived on scene.  The tug was escorting the Alam Manis to San Fernando when the list increased.  The 21 crew on the Alam Manis were evacuated and safely transfered to the tug. The chief mate of the Alam Manis suffered a heart attack. and perished.  The Alam Manis was blown ashore and grounded some 300 yards off shore. No reports of pollution released. Reports state the bulker cargo will be stabilized and lightered before it will be refloated and towed to a shipyard.

On July 13, the 85 meter long, 4071 dwt cargo vessel Wan Li 8 collided with the 97 meter long, 5287 dwt bulk carrier Heng Run in the East China Sea off Zhoushan, China. The Wan Li 8 was en route to Kaohsiung from Zhangjiagang with 3700 tons of steel when it struck the Heng Run as it was proceeding from Vietnam to South Korea with 5000 tonnes of ore. The Heng Run’s hull was ripped open and the water ingress quickly sank the vessel in just a few minutes.  Fourteen of the 15 crew on board the Heng Run was able to abandon ship.  One crewman swam to nearby Huangxing Island while 12 others were rescued by authorities.  One body was found in the water  while another was still reported as missing.

Typhoon winds send bulk carrier Xin Mao aground

The 160 meter long, 24,148 dwt bulk carrier Xin Mao ran aground off Taizhou, China. The bulk carrier was at anchor when strong winds from the approaching typhoon caused its anchors to drag. The Xin Mao attempted to heave its anchor and maneover away from shore when it suffered a mechanical fault.  The crew sent out a distress call asking to be evacuated off the vessel.  Reports state all 14 crew were later rescued by authorities from Taizhou.  No reports of injuries.
