The 180 meter long, 42263 dwt bulk carrier John 1 went aground off Rose Blanche, Newfoundland, Canada.  The John 1 was en route from Spain to Montreal in ballast when it suffered power outage.  The vessel requested a tug, but ice conditions delayed it.  The Canadian Coast Guard vessel Earl Grey also responded and reached the John 1.  The Earl Grey tried several times to connect a towline, but these attempts were unsuccessful.  The John 1 continue to drift until it grounded just 600 feet off shore.   Authorities dispatched a helicopter to the scene which airlifted all 23 crew on board the bulk carrier.  No reports of injuries, damage or pollution released.

The 180 meter long, 35000 dwt bulk carrier Hanze Goteborg went aground off Portsmouth, Virginia.  The Hanze Goteborg loaded  with soybeans went aground in the Elizabeth River.  The vessel was refloated the following day with the aid of several tugs.  No reports of injuries, damage or pollution released.  The Hanze Goteborg was escorted by tugs and proceeded to a nearby berth.  The cause of the grounding is under investigation.

The 220 meter long, 75123 dwt bulk carrier Rapallo went aground off Anholt Island, Denmark. The Rapallo was proceeding with a cargo of coal from Ventspils, Latvia to Algeciras, Spain when it went aground.  The vessel was unable to refloat itself under its own power.  Anti-pollution vessels were dispatched to the scene to monitor the situation.  No reports of injuries.  Reports state the vessel was proceeding without a pilot which was discouraged by Danish authorities.
