The 50 foot long four-car cable ferry Ironton Ferry caught fire while moored in Ironton, Michigan on Lake Charlevoix. The fire started in one of the vehicles on the deck. The fire was extinguished a short time later by the local fire department. No reports of injuries to passengers or crew on board. The Ironton ferry operates between mid-April through mid-November making upwards of 100 trips across Lake Charlevoix each day.
A chain ferry servicing between East and West Cowes ran aground at East Cowes, River Medina. The “floating bridge” had become stuck along the shoreline when the tide receded. No reports of injuries, damage or pollution released. Ferry service was suspended for several hours until the following high tide. The same ferry became stranded a month earlier when it had become delayed unloading vehicles as the tide went out.
