West Wind

The 46 foot long fishing vessel West Wind sank off Crescent City, California.   The West Wind were fishing crab when the crew noticed the vessel was riding lower in the water.  Upon inspection, they found the boat was taking on water.   The crew sent out a distress call to the Coast Guard.   The message was garbled, but the Coast Guard was able to calculate the approximate location and dispatched a helicopter and motor lifeboat to the scene.   The helicopter reached the scene and found the crew of three in a raft with two of them in their survival suits.  The helicopter was able to winch up all three men and safely return to Crescent City.   The one crewman who was not in a survival suit suffered from hypothermia.   There was some debris from the sunken vessel, but no signs of a fuel spill.

Duck Boat Fire

Duck Boat Fire

A duck boat suffered a fire in its engine room at McCovey Cove, California.  The vessel sent out a distress call and the Coast Guard dispatched a rescue boat and the San Francisco Fire Department dispatched a fire boat to the scene.   The Coast Guard rescued the 28 people on board and tranported them to shore.   The Fire Boat extinguished the fire.    No reports of injuries.   The cause of the fire is under investigation.  A report states the fire started after the engine overheated.

Aston Trader II Aground

Aston Trader II Aground

The 190 meter long, 55496 dwt freighter Aston Trader II went aground on the San Joaquin River.   The Aston Trader II was proceeding to Stockton when it temporarily lost control and went aground.   The Coast Guard responded to the scene and an inspection showed no significant damage and no pollution being released.  Two tugs were able to free the Aston Trader II and the vessels proceeded to Stockton.   The freighter had no cargo at the time of the incident.  An investigation is being conducted.
