The 20 meter long passenger vessel Leviathan II capsized and sank off Plover Reefs, Vargas Island near Tofino, British Columbia. The Leviathan II had 27 persons on board on a whale watching tour when it capsized and partially sank. The master of the vessel was able to send out a distress call. Several nearby vessels responded while the Coast Guard began a search and rescue operation.  Reports state 23 of 27 persons were accounted with 4 still reported missing.  Four persons pulled from the water perished.  Many of those rescued were being treated in nearby hospitals and private homes.

Canadian authorities have dispatched an investigation team to the area. The cause of the capsizing has not been reported.

The 107 meter long, 6285 dwt chemical tanker Jo Spirit ran aground on the St. Lawrence River near Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The tanker had suffered engine failure while proceeding int the South Shore Canal. Without power, the Jo Spirit veered off course and struck the canal embankment. No reports of injuries or pollution released. Traffic in the area on the incident was halted on the St. Lawrence River. Two tugs were dispatched to the scene to refloat the tanker. The Jo Spirit was en route to Cuxhaven from Hamilton with a cargo of rum.

The 152 meter long, 8,388 tonne cargo vessel Lena J allided with a bridge in the Welland Canal at Port Colborne, Ontario, Canada. The Lena J was en route to Burns Harbor, Indiana from Montreal when it struck Bridge 19.  The vessel and bridge sustained damage.  Traffic on the bridge was halted until it could be inspected.  The Lena J was able to proceed to Colborne where it later berthed and inspected for damaged. No reports of injuries and no pollution was released.
