The 225 meter long, 38960 dwt self-unloading bulk carrier Atlantic Erie ran aground on Lake Erie near Port Colborne,  Ontario.  The vessel was approaching Port Colborne when it veered out of the navigation channel and ran into shallow water.  The vessel’s bow was holed allowing water ingress into the forepeak.  No reports of injuries or pollution released.  A tug was dispatched to the scene,  but no reports when refloating operations will begin.  Canadian authorities have dispatched a team to the scene to start investigating the incident.

The  146 meter long, 10385 dwt freighter BBC Chile went aground on the St. Lawrence River near the entrance to the South Shore Canal near Montreal, Quebec.  The freighter had gone outside the channel as the vessel was entering Lake St. Louis.  No reports of injuries, damage or pollution released. The  BBC Chile was refloated the following night with the aid of a few tugs and resume its upbound voyage.  Reports state traffic was halted for several hours as the vessel partially blocked the channel.

The 180 meter long, 42263 dwt bulk carrier John 1 went aground off Rose Blanche, Newfoundland, Canada.  The John 1 was en route from Spain to Montreal in ballast when it suffered power outage.  The vessel requested a tug, but ice conditions delayed it.  The Canadian Coast Guard vessel Earl Grey also responded and reached the John 1.  The Earl Grey tried several times to connect a towline, but these attempts were unsuccessful.  The John 1 continue to drift until it grounded just 600 feet off shore.   Authorities dispatched a helicopter to the scene which airlifted all 23 crew on board the bulk carrier.  No reports of injuries, damage or pollution released.
