The 134 meter long container ship  Simushir became disabled off Haida Gwaii (Queen Charlotte Islands), Canada. The vessel had lost power and had gone adrift.  The Simushir was just 14 kilometers off shore in bad conditions with waves reaching 4 metres in height.

The crew contacted authorities who dispatched vessels to the scene.  The U.S. Coast Guard cutter Spar and Canadian Coast Guard vessel Sir Wilfrid Laurier arrived on scene, but were not equipped to tow the Simushir to away from shore.   Another Canadian Coast Guard vessel Gordon Reid arrived a short time later and was equipped to tow the container ship.  The Reid attempted to attached lines to the Simushir, but each time the line snapped.  After the third attempt, the Gordon Reid halted further attempts.  The Simushir had shifted location and was an additional 30 kilometers further away from shore.

The tug Barbara Foss was requested and was reported to be heading to the scene to take the Simushir under tow. Reports state the Simushir was carrying 268 containers with mining equipment from Everett, Washington bound for Russia.  No reports of injuries to the 10 crew on board.

The 180 meter long, 42263 dwt bulk carrier John 1 went aground off Rose Blanche, Newfoundland, Canada.  The John 1 was en route from Spain to Montreal in ballast when it suffered power outage.  The vessel requested a tug, but ice conditions delayed it.  The Canadian Coast Guard vessel Earl Grey also responded and reached the John 1.  The Earl Grey tried several times to connect a towline, but these attempts were unsuccessful.  The John 1 continue to drift until it grounded just 600 feet off shore.   Authorities dispatched a helicopter to the scene which airlifted all 23 crew on board the bulk carrier.  No reports of injuries, damage or pollution released.

The fishing vessel Shawn and Gary found itself in dire condition off Liverpool, Nova Scotia.  The Shawn and Gary had just started fishing a few hours after lobster season started when it suffered a leak and began to sink.  The two crew on board sent out a distress call before having to abandon ship into the vessel’s life raft.  The two men were quickly rescued by the nearby fishing boat Patty and Andy.  No reports of injuries.  The Canadian Coast Guard vessel G. Peddle arrived on scene a short time later.  The Shawn and Gary was last reported as submerged with just a small portion of the bow above water.  The cause of the sinking was not reported.
