The 81 meter long general cargo vessel Bomar Moon ran aground on the Köhlbrand, an anabranch of the Unterelbe River, off Hamburg, Germany. The Bomar Moon had departed from a nearby oil plant when it suffered a power blackout.  The crew performed an emergency anchor, but the cargo the vessel struck bottom.  A nearby tug was able to refloat the Bomar Moon and proceeded to Steinwerder aided by two police boats.  No reports of injuries. The cargo vessel was detained while divers inspected the hull for damage.

The 238 ton, cargo vessel Lurongyu 859 sank off the Oki Islands, Japan. Authorities in Japan were notified by Chinese search and rescue that the Lurongyu 859 had sunk with 14 crew on board. Five crew had been rescued, but nine were still reported as missing. Patrol and rescue boats have continued search efforts for the missing men.

On September 17, the 109 meter long cargo ship Green Freezer ran aground off Fáskrúðsfjörður, Iceland. The Green Freezer had struck onto a skerry.  No reports of injuries. The tanker Laugafell was dispatched to the scene.  Some 140 tons of fuel oil was pumped off the vessel to help lighten the Green Freezer and reduce the risk of pollution released.  The Icelandic Coast Guard vessel Thor pulled the Green Freezer free on September 20.  The oil was then pumped back to the Green Freezer from the Laugafell.  Both vessels proceeded to Fáskrúðsfjörður.  No reports of pollution released.
