On September 30, the 90 meter long, 5248 dwt cargo vessel Sommen (IMO: 9968138) became disabled on the Kiel Canal near Dückerswisch, Germany. The Sommen was enroute to Kingston upon Hull from Oernskoeldsvik when it suffered engine breakdown.  Unable to restart the engine, the Sommen requested assistance with a tug from Brunsbüttel. The tug took the Sommen under tow to a berth in Brunsbüttel.  No reports of injuries, damage or pollution released.

On October 2, the 180 meter long, 33328 dwt cargo vessel Rijn Confidence (IMO: 9635248) caught fire while berthed on the Avon River at the port of Avonmouth, England. The vessel was loading a cargo of scrap metal at the Royal Edward Dock when a fire broke out in cargo hold number 2. The crew alerted the local fire brigade who responded with some 60 fire fighters to the scene. The fire fighters were quickly able to extinguish the blaze and examined the hold with thermal cameras for any hot spots. No reports of injuries.

Reports do not state if the Rijn Confidence sustained any significant damage from the fire. The vessel owners state there was no pollution released.

On October 2, the 116 meter long, 3332 dwt cargo vessel Florica (IMO: 8837904) ran aground on the Don River in Rostov Oblast, Russia. The Florica had departed from Rostov-on-Don bound for Samsun, Turkey with a cargo of steel billets when it struck a sandbar.  Two tugs boats were dispatched to pull the Florica free. Reports state the vessel was undamaged and no pollution released.  No reports of injuries to the 14 crew on board.

This isn’t the first incident for the Florica. On July 23, 2014, the Florica allided with a pier in the port of Azov, Russia. The vessel damaged a ladder connecting the pier to a dolphin, but the cargo was undamaged.
