Darwin

The 75 meter long, 1537 dwt cargo vessel Darwin ran aground in the Lillebælt off Årø Island, Denmark.  The Darwin was heading for Kolding from Hamburg with a cargo of sunflower meal when it grounded in shallow water.  No reports of injuries.

The Darwin remained aground as authorities requested diver to inspect the hull for damage.  Reports state the cargo vessel had grounded near a fish farm and authorities were concerned over possible release of pollution.

Divers inspected the hull and found no damage.  The tug Baltsund was dispatched to the scene and pulled the Darwin free.  The Darwin continued on its voyage to Kolding.

On August 11, the 70 meter long cargo vessel Hai Ha 38 sank in the South China Sea near Da Nang, Vietnam. The Hai Ha 38 departed from Quang Ninh to Can Tho with a cargo of 1600 tons of bricks.  The Hai Ha 38 proceeded into strong winds caused by a nearby tropical depression when it suffered a cargo shift.  The cargo of bricks shifted and the cargo vessel developed a 40 degrees list to starboard.  With the Hai Ha 38 in danger of capsizing and sinking, the crew sent out a distress call and requested assistance.

Vietnamese authorities dispatched two search and rescue boats to the scene.  Rescuers arrived a short time later and rescued all 11 crew members. One crewman jumped into the sea after panicking, but he was later recovered.  No reports of injuries.

The 173 meter long, 26052 dwt cargo vessel Hazar went adrift on the Bosphorus near Çengelköy, Turkey.  The Hazar had suffered a malfunction and became disabled and drifted towards the shoreline.  The crew was able to restore power and reversed engines before dropping anchor.  The Hazar then proceeded to a nearby anchorage where it was met by turkish patrol boats.  No reports of injuries, damage or pollution released.  The Hazar was en route to Livorno from Aradeniz.
