On the morning of June 25, the 80 meter long, 3002 dwt cargo vessel Baltic Arrow (IMO: 9243863) ran aground on the River Nene near Wisbech, England. The Baltic Arrow was proceeding to Wisbech from Riga with a cargo of timber with a pilot onboard. While making a course correction, the Baltic Arrow swung to starboard and ran aground with the bow stuck on the river bank and the stern on the opposite bank. No reports of injuries, damage or pollution released.

Initial attempts to refloat the vessel were unsuccessful due to the low water levels. A later attempt assisted by two tugs was successful later the same day on the evening high tide.  Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident. A preliminary report stated the pilot didn’t realize he had over-corrected the vessel’s heading resulting in the grounding. Fatigue was mentioned as a contributing factor as the pilot was at the helm for over 2 hours.  Local authorities have done a survey of the river and begun additional training for its pilots.

On January 18, the 90 meter long, 4198 dwt general cargo vessel Tarzan allided with the lock wall on the Kiel Canal at Brunsbüttel, Germany. The Tarzan was headed for Liepaja, Latvia from Eemshaven, Netherlands when it entered the northern lock at Brunsbüttel. The vessel struck the side wall resulting in a two to three meter scratch along the port side of the vessel.  Authorities detained the Tarzan for inspection before allowing it to proceed on its voyage. No reports of injuries or pollution released. Reports state the cause of the incident was due to a miscommunication.

On January 16, the 75 meter long, 2368 dwt cargo vessel Viet Phu 16 suffered hull damage in the East China Sea near Cu Lao Cham Island, Quang Nam, Vietnam. The Viet Phu 16 was en route from Hai Phong to Chu Lai with 2330 tons of cement when it struck bottom. The vessel sustained bow hull damage and two cargo holds were holed. The crew directed the vessel to shallow waters off Cu Lao Cham Island to avoid sinking.

Authorities dispatched to scene and inspected the hull damage. Divers were later called to conduct repairs to the hull. No reports of injuries to the 10 crew and no pollution released.
