The 98 meter long, 4678 dwt cargo vessel Kapitan Yakovlev ran aground near St. Petersburg, Russia. The Kapitan Yakovlev was headed for the terminal in Kronshtadt to unload its cargo of 4200 tons of steel when struck bottom.  Unable to refloat itself, the cargo vessel requested assistance. A tug was dispatched and was able to refloat the Kapitan Yakovlev a short time later.  No reports of injuries, damage or pollution released.

On July 5, the 69 meter long, 1952 dwt cargo vessel An Phu 868 was lost off Vung Tau, Vietnam. The An Phu 868 sailed from An Giang enroute to Hai Phong and Phan Thiet when it struck a shoal.  The cargo vessel split-in-two and the cargo holds rapidly filled with water.  The crew sent out a distress call and abandoned ship into the vessel’s life raft.  Authorities alerted nearby vessels to assist in rescue efforts.  The cargo vessel Truong Hai Star 3 responded and rescued all 9 crew of the An Phu 868.  No reports of injuries.  Reports state that the vessel remains on the shoal and a salvage team plans to remove the 10 tons of bunker fuel off the An Phu 868.

On June 24, the 132 meter long, 16949 dwt cargo vessel Thorco Lineage ran aground off Raroia Atoll, French Polynesia.  The cargo vessel was en route to Hobart, Australia from Baltimore, United States when it ran ashore along the northern edge of the atoll.  No reports of injuries to the 18 crew on board, damage or pollution released.  

Authorities dispatched the multi-purpose naval vessel Bougainville to the scene. The Bougainville will attempt to refloat the Thorco Lineage. The Bougainville was able to attach a towline and pull the cargo vessel free.  However, the the towline broke leaving the Thorco Lineage adrift in the open sea.  Reports state the Thorco Lineage drifted away from the shoreline and a tug from Papeete was dispatched to take over the towing of the cargo vessel later the same day.   Authorities are still monitoring the situation.
