Changqing 16

The 135 meter long freighter Changqing 16 capsized and sank on the Yangtze River near Zhenjiang, China.  The Changqinq 16 was en route to Zhenjiang from Majishan Island with 10168 tons of iron ore.   Reports state 17 people were rescued with 2 persons were lost of the passengers and crew on board.  Rescue teams continue to search the lower stretch of the river for seven missing people.  The cause of the accident is not known, but the authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.

Jing Huai 188

Jing Huai 188

The 45 meter long coastal freighter Jing Huai 188 sank near Shanghai, China.   The freighter was en route to Nantong City from Shanghai with 770 tons of steel when the vessel when it was struck by a heavy gale.   The vessel’s cabin quickly flooded and the crew of the Jing Huai 188 requested assistance.  The maritime authorities at Shanghai responded sending patrol vessels to the scene.   The rescuers pulled two people out of the water.   The survivors, an elderly couple, were the grandparents of the master of the vessel.   The master and two other family members were listed as missing.   A small amount of fuel pollution was spotted and later cleaned up by authorities.  Reports state the vessel will be salvaged later.

Guang Yi

Guang Yi

The 108 meter long, 5782 dwt container ship Guang Yi  became disabled off Quanzhou, China.   The Guang Yi suffered engine failure after leaving port and was towed back to port.    No reports of injuries, damage or pollutoin released.   The container ship made repairs and proceeded the next day to its destination to Taichung, Taiwan.
