Bright Ruby Sunk

The 167 meter long, 26589 dwt freighter Bright Ruby sank in the South China Sea some 300 miles south Hong Kong, China.   The vessel was proceeding from Penang, Malaysia, to Rizhao, China with a cargo of steel when it encountered bad weather.  For unknown reasons, the Bright Ruby was overwhelmed by the weather and sank.   The freighter was able to send out a distress call to the Hong Kong Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Center.  The Center requested nearby vessels to assist while launching aircraft.   Eight vessels responded and rescued 15 of the 21 crew on board the Bright Ruby.  Six crewmen were reported as missing.

Collision off Qingdao

Collision off Qingdao

The 336 meter long, 98849 dwt container ship Hamburg Bridge collided with the 93 meter long, 4424 dwt freighter Oriental Sunrise near Qingdao, China.  The Hamburg Bridge sliced into the Oriental Sunrise which quickly filled with water and sank.  Of the 19 crew on board, nine were rescued with the remainder reported as missing.  Three crewmen were severely injured and taken to hospital.  Reports state one crewman later died while the others were in critical condition.  Authorities dispatched 13 vessels to the scene looking for any other survivors.  The cause of the collision has not been released.  Authorities are conducting an investigation into the incident.

First Ferry IX

The 27 meter long high speed ferry First Ferry IX struck a mooring pillar just as it was leaving one of Hong Kong outlying islands.  The First Ferry IX pulled away from Cheung Chau Pier in the early morning was with 145 passengers when it hit a mooring pillar some 400 meters from the pier.   The ferry’s bow was crushed leaving a large hole into the interior of the vessel.  Nine passengers were severely injured and 70 others suffered cuts and bruises.  The master of the ferry stated that it was too late to avoid the crash when the pillar was spotted.   At the time of the incident the pillar was not lit.   The ferry company has suspended the master and is conducting an investigation.
