The 107 meter long, 7,0001 dwt cargo vessel City ran aground on the breakwater at Sakata, Honshu, Japan. The City was en route to Funakawa from Akita in rough weather when it approached the port of Sakata. The City was pulled by strong currents and winds causing the vessel to strike the breakwater and run aground. The City sustained hull damage with breaches below the waterline allowing water ingress. The City listed over to starboard and partially sank. Authorities dispatched a helicopter to the scene and was able to hoist all 18 crew to safety. No reports of injuries. Reports state the vessel may be salvaged when conditions improve. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.
