The 65 foot long fishing vessel Five J’s went aground off Brenton Point near Newport, Rhode Island.  The vessel had lost power and had gone adrift.  The crew attempted to drop anchor, but the anchor was unable to hold.  No reports of injuries.   The Five J’s had some quantity of diesel fuel on board at the time of the grounding.  Authorities have teams assessing the situation and condition of the vessel as salvage operations begins. The Coast Guard is conducting an investigation into the incident.

Equity

The 42 foot long fishing vessel Equity sank near Heceta Island, Alaska.  The fishing vessel had struck rocks near the island holing the hull.   The three crew on board contacted the Coast Guard that the vessel was filling with water and were abandoning into the vessel’s life raft.   A helicopter was dispatched to the scene, but another fishing vessel, the High Pocket, arrived and rescued the three crewmen.   No reports of injuries.   The Coast Guard disabled the EPIRB and disposed the liferaft.   The men were taken to Klawock.

Twin Lights

Twin Lights

The 42 foot fishing vessel Twin Lights capsized off Race Point, Cape Cod, Massachusetts.  The vessel was fishing in heavy swells when its gear got caught on the bottom.   The Twin Lights capsized sending its two crew into the water.  The nearby fishing vessel Glutton witnessed the event and responded to the scene.   The Glutton’s crew rescued one man from the water and attempted to find the other missing person.   The Coast Guard was notified and dispatched a rescue helicopter and two cutters to the scene.   The Twin Lights sank just as the Coast Guard reached the scene.   A search for the missing man continued into the night.   The Twin Lights now rests in 190 feet of water.
