Petalon Aground

The 229 meter long freighter Petalon loaded with coal went aground in the Thimble Shoals Channel, Chesapeake Bay.   The vessel was refloated a few hours later.   The Coast Guard sent out a navigation team to check to see if the navigation buoys are in the proper place.   The Army Corps of Engineers are also doing a survey of the channel to verify the depths.   The Petalon will have an inspection for damage.   No reports of injuries or pollution being released.

Dintelborg Disabled by Fire

Dintelborg Disabled by Fire

The 8867 dwt freighter Dintelborg became disabled off the coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts after a fire on the bridge.   The small fire was extinguished by the crew, but left the vessel without power and no communications.   The vessel was adrift in 16-foot seas and 20 knot winds.  A  Coast Guard jayhawk helicopter was dispatched and was able to communicate with the vessel who were using a hand-held radio.  The tug Rown Mcallister was sent to get the Dintelborg under tow to Providence, Rhode Island for repairs.   No reports of injuries or pollution being released.  The Coast Guard is investigating the cause of the fire.

Forklift Adrift?

The 143-foot barge Brittney Moe went adrift after loosing her towline southwest of Kodiak Island, Alaska.   The tug Seahawk had lost the barge after it had partially lost steering and the barge broke away.   The conditions were rough with 45-55 mph winds and 12 foot seas.   The Brittney Moe was loaded with a forklift, conex box and tools aboard.   The Coast Guard helicopter spotted the barge and has relayed its location.   The barge is no danager of running aground and arrangements have been made to recover it.
