Star King

The 55 foot long fishing vessel Star King capsized and sank off the entrance to the Columbia River near Warrenton, Oregon. The fishing vessel began taking on water during the early morning hours.  Unable to control the flooding, the crew sent out a distress call  just before the fishing vessel capsized. The five crew on board were able to escape and abandon ship into the sea. The nearby crab fishing vessel Sea Ballad responded to the distress call and pulled the five crew from the water. No reports of injuires.

The Star King had some 300 gallons of fuel on board, but no signs of pollution have been reported. Reports state the crew had been fortunate to have donned survival suits which prevented any casualties. The Coast Guard states the sunken Star King is a navigation hazard, but it is not blocking traffic.

The 180 meter long, 37648 dwt bulk carrier Pola Palekh ran aground in the Beaufort Inlet near Morehead City, North Carolina. The Pola Palekh had entered the navigation channel at low tide bound for Morehead City with a cargo of 35,800 tons of fertilizer.  When the bulker was between buoys 16 and 17, the vessel went hard aground. The Coast Guard dispatched a response boat to the scene and inspected the Pola Palekh for damage. Traffic was halted for several hours until several tugboats were able to refloat the Pola Palekh on the rising tide. No reports of injuries, damage or pollution released.

The 50 foot long fishing vessel Ms Nicani ran ashore off the Siuslaw River Bar  North Jetty at Florence, Oregon. There were no injuries to the two crew on board.  The Coast Guard is monitoring the situation and reported that there was no pollution concerns. Reports state a local tug has been contacted to begin salvage operations.
