Mercosul Santos

The 210 meter long, 35239 dwt container ship Mercosul Santos collided with a tug on the Amazon River near Obidios, Brasil. The Mercosul Santos was headed towards Manaus when it struck a tug that was pushing nine barges. One barge was cut in two and sank to the river bottom. Another barge was crushed and remain stuck on the bulbous bow of the Mercosul Santos.

Nine of the 11 crew who were on board the barges and tug were reported as missing and feared dead. Authorities requested divers from Santarem to search for the missing crew.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.

The 183 meter long, 48580 dwt tanker Seafrontier collided with the 225 meter long, 75492 dwt bulk carrier Huayang Endeavour in the English Channel near Dover, England. The Huayang Endeavour struck the loaded Seafrontier near the stern. The tanker sustained a hull breach above the waterline and damage to multiple levels to its superstructure. The Huayang Endeavour also sustained damage to it’s bow section.  No reports of injuries on either vessel and no reports of pollution released.

The tug Abeille Languedoc was dispatched from Boulogne and took the Seafrontier under tow. The Huayang Endeavour dropped anchor in the channel between the shipping lanes for a period, but later proceeded on to Dunkerque. The Maritime Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC) in Dover dispatched two patrol boats and two helicopters to conduct an assessment. An investigation of the incident has been launched.

USS Fitzgerald

The 154 meter long,  United States Navy destroyer Fitzgerald collided with the 223 meter long, 39565 dwt container ship ACX Crystal in the early morning hours off Yokosuka, Japan.  The ACX Crystal bow had struck the starboard hull of the Fitzgerald causing significant damage including water ingress in three compartments.  The ACX Crystal sustained scrapes and dents along its bow, but damage is reported to be limited.

The captain of the Fitzgerald sustained injuries and was medivac off the vessel.  Another sailor was evacuated off the vessel by the Japan Coast Guard.  Reports state 7 sailors on the Fitzgerald were reported missing.

The Fitzgerald was able to head back to port under its own power. Escorted by the Japan Coast Guard, the Fitzgerald proceeded with limited propulsion.
